Clay Photo Ornament Tutorial

Clay Vacation Map Photo Ornament

Happy Tuesday friends! I hope your week started off great and you are having a wonderful Tuesday so far! Can you believe we are just over two weeks away from Christmas?  Thankfully we are almost done shopping for everyone and the gifts are wrapped for the most part.

Today I wanted to share with you a tutorial on a cute ornament idea that you can make for yourself or others.  If you remember a few weeks ago I participated in an ornament exchange where I exchanged ornaments with a fellow blogger.  Well the ornament that she made me, inspired me so much that I HAD to make some of my own for my travel buddies.

Supplies

Making the Clay Ornament

I have always wondered how people transfer pictures onto other items and thankfully Christine did the research about what you need to do.  The first step is to pick your picture you want to transfer onto the ornament.  Once you have you picture picked out, invert the picture in your system (so that it is backwards) the picture needs to be printed with a laser printer.  It is important that you use a laser printer because an ink jet printer puts the ink onto the paper differently and will not come off properly.  Justin and I only have an ink jet printer at home, so I took the pictures to work with me and printed them off there.

Once you have your supplies gathered, roll your clay out to be 1/4" thick.  You can make your clay thicker or thinner - I just preferred it this thickness as mine is that thick as well.

Once your clay is rolled and ready to go, place your picture face down onto the clay and begin wetting the paper.  Once your paper is good and wet, you will be able to see your image through the paper - this is when you start gently rubbing the paper off of the picture.  It is important to not press too hard as the picture can rub off of the clay.  Thankfully I only had it rub off along the edges, so it gave it more of a vintage look.

I also found the rubbing in small circles helped to not allow the picture to rip off the clay.  Once you have as much paper as possible off of the picture, you will bake the clay at 250 degrees for 15 minutes.  The instructions said to bake for 15 minutes for every 1/4 thickness.

After baking, I was a bit surprised at how soft the clay "felt" but once it cooked down the clay hardened right up and was easy for me to handle.

After baking, I added the location and year to the back of the ornaments plus the Uruguayan flag.  I made my ornaments a little larger than I had anticipated to, so there was a lot of blank space.  The flag made the most sense to me because you rarely see ornaments with the countries flag on them.

I don't have vinyl at home right now so I purchased some alphabet stickers at the store to put the lettering on the back of the ornament.  Once I finally figured out how I wanted them to be placed, I used my mod podge to seal the letters and the flag down to the back of the ornament.  The stickers seemed like they would have stayed on with no issue, but the flag was not a sticker.

Once the back of the ornament dried, I also put a coat of mod podge on the front of the ornament to help seal down the picture a little better and give it a more finished look.

Once the mod podge dries, take a ribbon or twine and make a little knot to hang the ornament onto the tree ~ and you have a clay ornament!

I am thinking about making more of these ornaments with other shapes as gifts for newly weds and new parents - they are relatively easy and cheap to make!

Question of the Day: What is your favorite ornament?

Weekend Highs and Lows #14

Hello everyone!I hope you had a wonderful weekend filled with fun and exciting adventures  If you want more information about the party, please check out this post

Highs

Friday night the girls and I got together to celebrate Friendsmas.  I love this tradition and look forward to it every year.  This year was a little different because we celebrated it at Caroline's house, which was perfect! Her house is so nice and it was fun to see her house all decorated for Christmas.

We spent the evening exchanging gifts and baking and decorating cookies and singing Christmas songs.  Such a wonderful time with my girlfriends.  I love them <3

Sunday I spent baking and decorating cookies with my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, nephew and niece.  I love this tradition and look forward to it every year.  Plus, Janelle made us matching aprons last year!

Lows

While Justin and I were out shopping on Saturday, I got a notification that our account had been over drafted.  Since we had not used the card in several days, we knew immediately that we were not the ones overdrawing the account.

Thankfully Chase is really good about things like this and fixed everything for us almost immediately.  #bankwin

25 Days of Socksmas: Week 1 {and a half}

Happy Friday Friends! Today I wanted to check in and share with you my first few days of Socksmas!

If you remember, I committed to doing 25 Days of Socksmas this year on my Month @ a Glance Post.  So far it has been fun picking out a different pair of socks each day and wearing them.  I have to admit, I am a bit sad that no one has commented on them yet at work... maybe next week?

Okay! So here are the sock choices for this week!

Day 1: Penguins
These were a nod to Christina as she loves penguins!

Day 2: Snowmen
I thought these were interesting because of the way the snowmen wrapped around my foot.  It almost looked like they continued from one sock to the next.

Day 3:
I picked these socks out because I had a blue cardigan on and they matched the outfit pretty well.  I love the variety in the socks.

Day 4
I really loved these socks.  For some reason they are softer than some of the other socks I have worn the last few days.  They made me wish we had some snow on the ground so play in.

Day 5
I actually did not put any thought into these socks other than I saw them and thought they were super cute.  They ended up being perfect because I had a green shirt to wear while volunteering.

Day 6:
I loved wearing these socks! Penguins are my favorite lately and these made me so happy.

Day 7:
I needed a more subtle sock this day because I had quite a few meetings on Monday.

Day 8:
Rudolf socks! These were perfect to wear for Wendesday since I had almost all black on.

Day 9:
Hearts and candy canes

Day 10:
Another meeting day at work so I went subtle again.  I really loved these socks though and will continue wearing them after Christmas is over.

Day 11:
A nod to my little girl kitty for today's Christmas socks.

Show and Tell Tuesday: Christmas Decor Edition

Happy Tuesday Friends! I hope all is well and you are having a great day so far! Today I am teaming up with Andrea for another fun round of Show and Tell Tuesdays.

Today I am going to share my Christmas decorations with you all! I am excited that Justin and I finally had a chance to get all of our decorations up in the apartment over the weekend.

When it comes to Christmas decor, I tend to get a little crazy.  Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday so I love to surround myself with all of the decorations we have plus the Christmas tree.

Last weekend, we went with Justin's family to get our trees.  I really love going out to get the tree - there is just something about being outside in the fresh air surrounded by pine trees.  I wish I didn't have an issue touching the pine needles (I'm allergic to the needles) because I would have a few more choices for type of tree.

After the tree is decorated with lights and ornaments, I take the time to decorate our "mantle".  This is decorated with a bunch of random items I have purchased or have been given over the years.  Two of the items you can see here are items purchased at craft shows.  I love getting little items from shows to support other local artists.

On the other side of the living room, I have a picture frame and glittery train next to the peace lily from my grandma's funeral.  I have to say I am very glad that plant is still living as I have a very black thumb and cannot keep plants living to save my life.

In the kitchen I have our blackboard decorated with fun Christmas sayings, a rug and some fun Christmas towels.  I wish I had more fun things to put up, but there really just is not a place for me to put them.  Maybe next year we will have a house where I can really deck out the kitchen for Christmas.  We shall see!

The last part of the apartment I decorate for Christmas is the main hallway.  This year I made some artwork to hang on the one wall and hung the cardinal artwork my mom purchased me on the adjacent wall.  I will share a tutorial on how to make the artwork later this week!

Well that is it for our decorations in our home! I cannot wait to see some of the other decorations you all have in your homes.

Question of the Day: What is your favorite Christmas decoration in your house?

I'd love to hear from you!

Weekend Highs and Lows #13

Hello everyone!I hope you had a wonderful weekend filled with fun and exciting adventures  If you want more information about the party, please check out this post

Highs

On Saturday, the Braun side of my family spent the greater part of Saturday volunteering our time for those in need in honor of my cousin who passed away.  Saturday would have been Drew's 30th birthday, so the family decided to do something in his honor.  So Saturday morning we went to a local church and helped prepare food for a ladies brunch.

After brunch, we went back to my aunts house to collect and organize the gifts for the family we adopted.  It was fun seeing all of the amazing gifts that we collected for this family.  The day ended with us decorating some cards for soldiers.

Saturday evening I spent cleaning the house and finishing decorations for Christmas.  At one point I turned to see Frye playing with an ornament.  I loved seeing him so in awe of the lights, tree and ornaments.  Such a sweet kitty.

Lows

I have bronchitis.  Again.

Currently: December 2015

Happy Friday Friends! I hope your week has gone well and you are looking forward to some fun things coming up this weekend! We will be honoring a family member by serving others this weekend {I'll give more details in my Monday post}.

I came across this idea on Becca Dorr's Blog and I thought it would be a fun new mini series to do on the first Friday of every month.

ANTICIPATING Christmas! I have so many things I need to get done in the next few weeks.  But I what I am anticipating most is the fun times to be had with family and friends.

CLEANING out the closet.  Last week I took several hours to go through all of my clothes in the closet because I had too many clothes that I was not wearing or had not worn.  It just did not make sense to keep it all.

DREADING my next long run.  I do not know what is going on, but I am really hating going out for my long runs.  The short ones are no big deal, but the long ones are just kicking my butt.

DRINKING a lot of water and Coca Cola.  I've been under the weather the last week, so I am hoping that by drinking large quantities of water I will start to feel better.  Unfortunately, I feel worse today than I did 4 days ago.

FEELING a bit overwhelmed with life.  There are so many things that I am supposed to be doing that I get overwhelmed and shut down.  Thankfully I have been able to take a step back and prioritize my life a little.  It is super helpful.

LISTENING to Christmas music as often as possible {without annoying the hubby}.  As soon as Thanksgiving passes I am the first person to have the Christmas radio station blaring in my car, at my desk, or at home.  But never before Thanksgiving.  Each holiday is special and deserves to be treated as such.

PLAYING Panda Pop.  It is a bit like Candy Crush where you resist playing the game out of fear of addiction... then you finally give in and become addicted.  Honestly, I have been stuck on this one level for weeks so the addiction is wearing off a bit, but it is a fun game and a good "brain break" when I get overwhelmed.

READING recipes.  I have been on the hunt for a good cookie that does not call for eggs.  Does anyone have any ideas?

RECOVERING from a nasty cold and a busy week.  Those two combined has not been fun for me.

TRYING to make more time for my husband.  Things have been a bit crazy lately and it seems like we are just ships passing in the night.  This Saturday we are going to go on a date and get some much needed one-on-one time.

WAITING to go to the doctor.  I have an appointment this afternoon and I cannot wait to see if she can help me with this awful cough.

WALKING less than I should be.  My fitbit has been dead for almost a week and I keep finding myself not getting enough steps.  I really need to charge that bad boy.

WEARING my "Keep Calm and Believe On" shirt.  I bought it on Black Friday and have been addicted ever since.  Honestly, I think it's my favorite buy for this year's shopping trip.

Question of the Day: What do you have going on "currently"?

I'd love to hear from you!
